It would take only one unthinkable event to disrupt your way of life. A terrorist attack, a global pandemic, or sharp currency devaluation, and you would be forced to fend for yourself in ways you’ve never dreamed of. By the end of this book, you won’t have a headful of useless information that you’ll soon forget, but rather, dozens of new and practical urban-survival skills that will be hard-wired into your brain. Survival is more than just creating a solar still and rubbing sticks together. It is about using your knowledge base to improvise and become a tactical thinker. Of course this book will cover the basics, such as food and water storage, but it will also teach you black-market bartering techniques, hand-to-hand combat, weapons of choice, how to survive during a riot, and how to become a “stunt-double” driver if being followed or in the event of an attempted carjacking. It will also discuss developmental psychology in relation to coping with a disaster, veterinary antibiotics that can be used in place of human antibiotics during a crisis, protecting against nuclear fallout, as well as emergency heating, cooking, lighting, power, and much more. I promise a good kick in the pants as a wake-up call to all those that are still in dreamland that are not yet driven to prepare. I hope that after reading this book you will become a survival warrior, willing to stop at nothing in order for you and your family to survive!

Found this when I was looking for something on preparedness that went beyond the super basic "Have some water and a flashlight handy!" PSA type pamphlets, but not to the "sell all of your stuff and live in a cabin in the woods" Unabomber style tomes. I almost didn't buy this book after taking a look at the cover. The silly pseudonym, the mention of Infowars, and most of all the ruggedly handsome white guy leading the distressed and partially clothed damsel through the streets while avoiding vaguely ethnic men with baseball bats made me think "Oh man...this is gonna be some nutjob's poorly edited survivalist fantasy, probably laced with references to black helicopters, nutty conspiracy theories, and mild to moderate racism." I wasn't wrong, but neither are the other reviews (which convinced me to buy it in spite of my misgivings). The first 75 pages or so aren't worth reading. If you're in the market for this sort of book, you already know why you're looking for a survival guide, and probably don't need some guy telling you about how fluoridation and genetically modified foods are man-made disasters on the level of large-scale terrorist attacks, or how suicide happens because people forget about Jesus, or how "marshal law" is coming soon. You also don't need the last 20 pages, which consists mostly of Bible verses (either you've already got a Bible in your bug-out bag or you don't care), or the 30-page section in the middle entitled "Lessons from Hurricane Katrina," which sounds helpful but mostly consisted of rants about the government, FEMA conspiracy theories, and some of the more egregious racism in the book (complete with "ebonics" that would be at home in a blackface routine). Similarly, scattered throughout are random rants about "entitlement," occasional anti-Obama cartoons, and other stuff that--even if you agree with it--is basically useless in terms of a survival guide. A good editor could have cut most of the crap and this would be a decent, lightweight planning/survival guide. It's also written in a panicky, "THE END IS NIGH" sort of tone, but that's fairly common with books of this sort, I suppose.

That said, if you can get past all that, there's actually a fair bit of useful information. Others have mentioned the section on veterinary antibiotics (mostly, fish antibiotics--e.g. amoxicillin used to treat a whole tank is the same as that used to treat an infection in humans), but there are also visual guides to expedient water filters, discussions of various types of gear and supplies, first aid guides, etc. Also a section on driving that is more fantasy than anything (I especially enjoyed the use of the Grand Theft Auto screenshots, almost certainly unlicensed), but there's definitely legitimate info here. My biggest problem with the actual information was that the author's definition of "urban" seems to be "living in the outskirts of the suburbs," as there are multiple references to building a false wall in your garage to hide your supplies or burying a years' worth of food in your backyard. I currently live in a studio apartment in a major metropolitan area, and was hoping there'd be more practical information for people without the means to do more traditional prepping. There is some, but not as much as I'd hoped.

In all, this book is probably a waste. If an editor cut out 1/2 to 3/4 of the pages, and dropped the price accordingly, it wouldn't be bad as a general prep and survival guide. As it is, you can probably find most of the stuff on the Internet and print it out. If you want to have it all in one place (the reason I bought the book), I'd recommend cutting out the useless bits yourself and tossing it in with your emergency supplies; that's probably what I'll do.

Countdown A Guide For Surviving The Urban Apocalypse Justin Thyme Books Reviews

This book is a must have! Not just for preppers but for anyone who lives in a urban area. "Countdown" contains all of the information you need to start prepping right now. I have read multiple books on prepping and survival but many of them do not contain all of the information you need. This book has more information than any book on this topic that is available right now. The author doesn't sugar coat any of the information too. This book is the slap in the face that people need to wake up out of their stupor and start doing for themselves. I am recommending this book to anyone and everyone I can!
Decent information, clear writing.
Especially like the alternate sources for antibiotics.....
Will use it to teach a neighborhood prepper class after the neighborhood book club reads "One Minute After" in January...
(First time the ladies will delve into a societal collapse type book... will be interesting what comes from it....)
I have many survival books..im a VietNam combat vet . hunter etc in alaska this book is right on the money..just the best clear understandable..best I have..i cant put it to words.... many other survival books are just fire starting paper.....IMO
When the SHTF, this is THE book to have in you BOB. The title indicates this is a survival guide for the urban dweller, but this is for EVERYONE. Whether you are a weekend warrior or a die hard Prepper, this is the ultimate guide to saving your property, family and your life. I've read a plethora of survival type guides and this one, written in plain, concise, practical, down to earth language will be easily understood by everyone. BUY THIS BOOK AND SAVE YOUR LIFE! You know, I'm a serious prepper. Around Christmas I wanted to get my idiot brother something to wake him up, and frankly, I thought this cover represented a book that would dumb it down for him. I ended up reading it for myself shortly thereafter, and man... this book has some seriously hot knowledge.

For instance, did you know veterinary antibiotics are 100% identical to the ones marketed to humans? Yea, and the writer lays out how to know what's what using the FDA's own codes on pills and capsules.

I literally had to take photo copies of this guy's item lists for various prepping purposes. Stop screwing around and get this book.
This book is as educational and eye-opening as it is applicable, and everyone should have it in their collection. Most topics in the book, were completely novel to me, and whether you believe in an impending apocalypse or not, I now consider it an invaluable part of my collection because it will teach you survival techniques for almost every emergency situation you can imagine. I've already been able to use the knowledge gained from this in several conversations I've had.

I strongly recommend!
Best survival book ever written! IT HAS EVERYTHING! - The writer has taken the best information from all kinds of different books, and put them together into the only survival book you will ever need. It explains "Surviving The Urban Apocalypse" in a way that's not terrifying, but fascinating; Really makes you think! The information given is very detailed and describes situations that make you realize the seriousness of the world we live in. I especially loved the diagrams, charts, pictures and illustrations... It really brought the book to life. Whether you're a seasoned survivalist/"prepper", or a novice looking for information on how to survive our country's impending future, this is the book for you!
