Skyla has lived secretly within the city walls of Bollingbrook for eleven years, playing among the airship factories and trainyards. As one of the Gutter District’s nameless destitute, it has gone undiscovered that she has a unique talent when Skyla looks at a person’s shadow she sees through it and into another world. She can see people’s fears, desires, their past sins--all as swimming, living creatures. Her mother has never told her the real reasons why they must remain hidden, never explained the true dangers that exist outside the city walls. But when her mother’s past catches up with them both, Skyla finds she must flee out of the city and into a world still recovering from a second Dark Age, a world of adults with secrets only she can see. For a stranger has recently moved into Bollingbrook, a man some call the Pope of the South, a witch hunter to some and a hero to others. When more children begin to disappear, suspicions are raised and an unlikely search party is formed to find Skyla in the hopes that they aren’t already too late.

What can I say about Skyla and the rest of the gang? Quite impressed with how the story was built up from the beginning and most of all how it ended. It wasn't one of those cliffhangers that kind of make you buy the second book to figure out what happens to the characters. It was slowly built up on a steady foundation, made to be magical, and then finished with aplomb.I wouldn't necessarily focus on the Steampunk nature of it (as other reviewers have), but more just the trials and tribulations of a little girl (and her mother) who has been "hated" for being something she had no control over. Without giving away any spoilers, the story of Skyla and her band of misfits was a refreshing take on "witches" and their persecution through the eyes of the church and the public. Oh and let's not forget about the (ok, fine the steampunk "clicky" machines) afterlife and the question of what is out soul ?
While story did go into flowery details sometimes (I feel), it didn't distract overall from the narrative. The concepts were extremely polished throughout the story and didn't feel forced. It brought to a nice boil the aspects of religion vs. humanity without being too preachy(stay away from Lyle).
Very well written and looking forward to the next adventure in Skyla's world. If you like intrigue, adventure, (a little)religious zealotry, and the after-life, then don't hesitate to give this book a read. You won't regret it!

A Latent Dark Skyla Traveler Martin Kee 9781479172177 Books Reviews
Great and entertaining book!!! and Its cool that i know the author personally. I love reading it on , so much easier!!!
Very strange. There were times during my reading when I was distracted and there for not paying strict attention. Times when I was falling asleep. I would read this again. Maybe the next time, I'll understand it better. I liked it even if I had a difficult time understanding the point.
I really enjoyed this book. A Latent dark is unique story reminiscent of Phillip Pullman's Golden Compass series. The world that Martin Kee has dreamed up is entirely foreign to me. Perhaps that is why I appreciate this book so much.
While most steampunk novels simply twist our current reality or recent past Skyla's view of the world is disturbingly beautiful, thought provoking, and well flushed out. You can immediately tell that the author fully immersed himself into this reality when he created this novel.
I do feel that some situations were rushed and looking back I wish that he had extended some parts of the book. I wanted to know more about Skyla's daily life and the relationship with her mother before the Reverend Lyle Summers enters the picture.
This book is one that I will go back too and re-read again. I do hope that the author plans on making this a series. Hopefully it involves Gil.
Very well written story. I love how it progresses so quickly but gives the back story to the characters as it goes along. Being a fan of Steam Punk books, I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a good read.
Really fantastic story. Inventive, interesting characters, quirks, and suspense. So much so that I'm going out of my way to review it because I liked it so much.
A good story, but part of me wanted more in the character development and plot detail. The story was good but it could have been awesome with more backstory.
I thought this was a very well written book, the characters as well as the world building were very well thought out. This is the story of Skyla, a young, destitute girl who unknown to her has the power to look at a persons shadow and see them as they really are. She can see the good and the bad in people even the sins they've committed. She sees these as some sort of terrible, dark creatures. Her mother has never told her why she is different from other girls her age and has left her to fend for herself. Skyla has to leave the city of Bollingbrook as a man that is called 'The Pope of the South' has arrived to search for her and her mother. Skyla finds that things are worse than ever though after leaving. I really liked reading this book and would definitely recommend it to anyone.
